The London Jukebox presents...
Toppings on Funk basics
Ma'Grass is an idea born from the mind of Italian multi-instrumentalist and music producer Matteo Grassi UK based since 2006.
His aim is to make a difference in people’s life by bringing fun, joy and uplifting rythms and melodies through his music and performances.
This lover of the 70’s era drew his inspiration from Parliament Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins, Larry Graham, Sly and the Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield.
His many collaborations include many artists from different horizons, active in the UK and European scenes including Gizelle Smith (Jalapeno Records), Curisity Killed The Cat (RCA Records), Aurora Dawn (singer of Alabama Three, Columbia/SME Records), Boom Yeah, etc.
In 2007, London and its exciting multicultural flavours and rythms stimulated his creativity, giving birth to new songs, mainly based on Old School Funk vibe.
Matteo Grassi along with dedicated musicians and friends created an eclectic mix of Jazzy, Afro, Funky, Latino, Ragga and Rock. Their music quickly became a cocktail of Western Culture music with a touch of Afro and Latin-Americano sounds, sprinkled with spices from Past, Present and Future.
Ma’Grass has had the privilege to gig all over London and throughout Europe, in France “Plein Feux Festival” opening for Ben l’Oncle Soul (2014), Italy and Germany. Within the past 3 years they made thousands of people shake their body in many popular venues and crowded events, performed at events like The Hackney Wicked Festival 2011 which involved all the street arts community of East London and they showcased in venues such as Passing Clouds, Hackney Picture House, Kensington Roof Gardens, Ritzy and many more.
Each member of the band, is part of a bigger collective of musicians who often play for the local communities and public events including charities for Africa, larger summer festivals, and TV shows (The Voice France).
Among their public appearances they count stages shared with artists like Peter Andre, Tony Momrelle (Incognito), Zion Train, Stormzy, etc.
And when they are not on stage they are either music teacher for children, entertainers in Alzheimer’s Centres.
The current band is formed of seven musicians: Matteo Grassi (Bass/Vocals), Najwa Ezzaher (vocals), Chris Lee Reynold (guitarist), Alessio Barelli (drummer), Gabriele Pribetti (saxophone), Brendan Musk (trumpet), Patrick Kenny (trombone).
Ma’Grass’ debut album called “Fingers in the Socket” was released in March 2013 and was featured in multiple compilations released worldwide: Funk BBQ (2013), Bar Sound Funk Martini” (2013), Funk Barsound Deluxe (2014) and It’s funky time! (2015).
